Sounds like fuel starvation.Has the fuel filter been changed? Some dealers don't change them at regular services, but mine had it changed every 24k. Worth a look. piggy
May be the fuel filter - I'm getting mine done this year's service on advice of my mechanic- from memory they are supposed to be replaced at the 90K service (along with the belts etc.) - he changes ones on Volvo's he works on every 40K - he reckons the amount of rubbish it traps is astonishing. Worth a go - but - as we all know with these Volvo's could also be the MAF, O2 sensor and the ETM. Hope it's the filter - least expensive to put right! All the best with it.
Well after 8 hours stood still, she started fine, and idled fine, and there were no problems like I had this morning. I think the fuel filter is a good call. Lets see how she behaves over the next seven days. If the MAF or O2 sensor I would have expected a sensor warning, These Diesels don't have the problems with the ETM - but they do have the injector issues on the earlier models. Being an 04 Plate the injectors should be fine. Vipes
The only other thing i can think of, is the egr valve. They can tend to get all sooted up and then stick. There's some good posts if you do a search. piggy
Don't have a solution for you but filter sounds possible though usually find if that's blocked then the problem does not go away. Out of interest have you ever cleaned out the airbox on your car ? Reason I asked is my car started idling roughly about two weeks ago, last weekend I was at a bit of a lose end so thought I'd have a look inside mine just out of interest. My car was serviced by the main dealer back in December. The filter was clogged and the box was full of debris. I don't believe they do anything other than pull the paper element out and put a new one in. I took the filter out and cleaned it out before giving it and the airbox a good hoover out. While I had the box stripped down I also sprayed the MAF with brake cleaner. Rough idling has not returned so far.

Hi piggy thanks for that - I've been through previous posts on the EGR valve and the sympoms do match. Many post refer to checking it and cleaning it - but don't say where it is! So Question, where is it and how would one check to see if it's sooted up and sticking? Airbox is fine , but the problem I had this morning was much more severe than just lack of air-intake, she was totally gutless and running very rough. Vipes Edit - is this what i'm looking for?
Hi Vipes.Put "egr plenum" into the search, one of the links is about cleaning the egr manifold. There is a reply by has a picture where to look. Does sound like your filter though. After leaving it all day all the pipes and filter refill, then when you start up, you are using the residual fuel. When you then stick your foot down and demand more ,you end up with not enough fuel coming through the filter, hence poor performance Hope this helps. piggy
