lip sync editing?

Sometimes I get an avi video whose video and audio are out of sync as a result of multiple factors (eg different lengths, a break somewhere in the audio but not in the video). Can anyone recommend any editor out there that will allow me to sync the audio with the video quickly?

virtualdub allows you to enter a delay on the audio. you can determine the delay in an audio editing program like audition, then plug this value into virtualdub. make sure "direct stream copy" is enabled for audio and video in virtualdub - that way there'll be no loss. this may not work on VBR audio in avi though.
