I'm sorry but after a few hours spent reading the manual and going through the zillion features I still don't know if it is possible to simply assign the loop playback to a MIDI key...

AFAIK, the loop is always playing back with the transport. if you want to mute loop playback, trigger an empty slot or automate a mute on the track.
