I'm thinking of getting a 867 G4 12" PB. I just got my 002R. I generally record 1 track at a time (in my apt, go to work if I need to do more) and mix a final song of about 20-26 tracks (maybe more). I usually have one send effect (12 tracks maybe), and about 16-20 insert effects (this is on my current Cubase SX PC rig). Will I have a problem doing this with a 12" 867 with 512 of ram? Will it possibly do more? Also, can I connect two extrenal monitors (one mirroring, and one extending) or can I just connect a single extension monitor? Another question: What RPM are the stock internal drives? 5400? Will this be a problem for PT LE? I will be using a 7200, 8mb 80 or 200 gig in a firewire enclosure for audio...
Firewire800 is not compatible w/ the 002r. I have both the 002r and the 12" PB G4. I am using the 12" till the G5 is approved. I am suprised how much the 12" is able to do. I am getting alot of plugins out of it in 48Khz Sample rate. I haven't tryed 98 cuase the dual 1.25 G4 could not do that much, plugin wise, w/ it. It is a good buy now from Apple, especially now that they ave gotten a CPU boost! what hardware are you thinking about or already have?
So do you guys think the 867 will handle what I listed above? Thanks!!
I posted a thread supposing that 98k was taxing my cpu and causing poor performance from my 002r. I can see now that other people have had the same experience. When I record at a lower sample rate I am able to get a decent track, plugin count but, I wouldn't be able to run what you listed in your first post.
Okay, how about this? Can someone running an 867 open there most system taxing song and tell me how many tracks, inserts and sends and also what percentage the CPU is at? I would really appreciate it!! Thanks Oh yeah, what about the Hard drive thing...any problem with stock internals running PT LE?? fast enough?
Depending on what you want to do with the 12"er will determine if you should even buy it or buy another drive. I believe if you're just using the 12"pb to track......(which means no use for lots of plugs but maybe a few) you don't have to have an external drive. You're all spending too much money on this stuff. I have been recording straight to the built in 40 gig drive my 12" has using PT 6.1, with the buffer set to level 4. I have not had a single hitch, I have done the tracking test successfully, i recently recorded 8 tracks while playing back 24......all to the built in slower drive, no problems. If you're planning on just tracking, this is all you need. I bring home all my track sessions and audio files to the DP 1.25 mac where i do all the editing that requires the "beef". Now on the other hand if you're planning on doing all of this on one computer "the PB" then ya.......an external drive will be nice and I would recommend the 15" at least, for the editing power. I only got the 12" for portable tracking, although I have ended up using it for almost everything now........video, graphics, recording/editing. I did a daveC test on my 867 (640 DDR) and got to the 24 track mark. Something that small doing that is more than I expected so im happy with it...........so will you; 12", 15", or 17"........they will all do what you need.
so what i'm getting from all this is that if i buy a new 15" powerbook with 2 firewire ports on it, i would still have to daisychain the 002r and my external drive? will that work well?
