How can I tell what's fitted to a V40/S40? From the "engines covered" thread I think I'm looking at the following list. D4192T 1996-1999 D4192T2 1999-2000 D4192T3 2001-2002 D4192T4 2002-2004 Of course all the vehicles I'm looking at are at the very beginning of those periods so there's every chance that it's an earlier car than the registration date and the engine will be the previous type. Is there a code on the VIN tag or part of the engine number that's a giveaway? Iain
4 forty, thanks for the link. Been looking for that for ages! According to the VIN number, I have the D4192T3 engine. From the posts here, am I to understand this isn't common rail? The model year portion of the VIN puts my car at 2003, which is in the middle of the D4192T4 reign. I'm slightly confused... :-s TIA Ed.
Dear friends, the T3 and T4 types of the engine D4192 have been installed parallel from 2001 to 2004 into the s40 and v40. Both are the same engines with common rail injection and they have very few differences. T3 produces 85 kW (115hp) T4 produces 75 kW (102hp) Best regards, Gerhard

My 2002 S40 has the VIN YV1VS26752F and the engine number B418ND5476. 1783cc. Petrol. I took it to a local Volvo repairer yesterday (not an authorised dealer) and he said it was a mitsubishi engine? It has recently decided not to tick over, but otherwise runs very well. I was advised to put some red X in the petrol and give it some clog as this type of engine prefers long runs rather than short stop-starts. The red X should clean out the injectors and carbon in the valves etc and this could clear up the problem. I have done as suggested and hope that this will help. Could anyone out there help me identify which engine is actually fitted so that I can start looking for pointers. And can anyone suggest anything to help me stop the engine cutting out every time I approach a junction. Also can anyone recommend a good engine tester / tuner in the North West that I could go to please
Dave, the S/V40 is a Mitsubishi platform and I know Volvo did fit the 1.8 GDi engine from Mitsubishi at some point. I understand the GDi (Gasoline Direct Injection) engine prefers high octane fuel (e.g. Shell V-Power) and can coke up on the cheap stuff. A good shot of fuel system cleaner should do the job if it is coked up. Otherwise, you could try a can of 10k Boost - this cleans from the air intake, through the combustion chamber and out the exhaust, so it should clear any coking on EGR valves, etc. as well. Ed.

The vin number on my 2006 56(2007 model--10th character) Diesel S60 says I have engine type 69(7th) and gearbox type is 1. What do 69 and 1 mean as neither are listed for s60 in
