On my 2000 C70 Auto, the bulb i presume that lights up the P,R,N,D,2,1, etc hasn't ever worked since I got the car. Although I know the gear sequence and can select the gear needed without needing to look down, I'd prefer to fix it for when my mum uses the car as she always whinges about this. I had a look in the handbook, but could not see any info on how to go about changing the light bulb for the gear selector lever. Can anyone in the know give me a step by step guide on how to go about fixing this light? Lastly, can you tell me what specification bulb I'd need so that I can go and get one?
i had the older 850 and the cenrte console had to be lifted up. also you need a special bulb in a holder whixh you can get from the dealer if you give them your chassis number
Ok, for the sake of it, I'll pick up a bulb and holder thingy from the dealer, at least that way I'll know all the bits needed will be present. Anyone know how to remove the centre console on the C70 (step by step please)?
If you are careful you can remove the 'wheatear bulb' from the holder, buy a replacement bulb from Maplins for about 50p, and put the new bulb into the holder. It's a bit fiddly, but quite straightforward. At the base of the holder you'll see two fine wires. These need to be removed from holder, and the bulb will simply pull out. The new bulb will come with two long wires attached - you just need to feed these down through the holder to form the new contacts. Looking at your pictures I think a quick solder might be needed too. Virtually all Volvo panel lamps work in the same way, so it's worth getting a stock of the bulbs from Maplins - they do a discount for quantity! I'm not totally sure about this, but I'm sure I remember being told that non-functioning autobox selector illumination is an MoT failure. Maybe a more expert person than I can clarify this? Cheers Jack
I had a look at the Maplin site and couldnt find a good match. The Volvo bulb is 1.2W but the closest match I could find was a 0.96W. I might give this a try. Its a shame they solder the bulbs to the terminal legs. I also had a look at Halfords. They do a 1.2W but the wire legs dont seem long enough to reach the terminals.
