In what situation could there be notes playing and yet I cannot see them? i have a track soloed and it has one midi part. the midi part has some of the notes, and yet I hear other notes that I cannot edit.

Maybe you've got notes on a different MIDI channel to the one your MIDI editor is set to? Try selecting 'All' from the channel drop-down.

Or...., if it's a part that has already been recorded, meaning it's a MIDI item, just open the item in the MIDI editor and switch to 'View/Mode: event list' and check the Channel column.
