How good is MPEG4/DivX/XviD/3.11 compression really?

All the movies I have have reduced resolution compared to the DVD source. Ofcourse, to be able to compare DVD/MPEG2 with any of these codecs you would need access to the same source used for encoding the DVD. But what compression ratio improvement over MPEG2 would these codecs actually have over DVD when encoded from same source into same target resolution? Mike

They'd propably achieve same quality at 30-50% of the bitrate, depending on the implementation,... e.g. prefiltering in codecs is preventing them to produce the same output *whistle* You have to be more different btw. MPEG4 simple profile and MPEG4 Advanced simple profile achieve different ratios... you can't give a real general reply because of the imprecise question. Regards, Koepi

There is alot talks going on.... The Movie Industry, Cable TV providers and more want to use Mpeg4. They even have plans for a new DVD format that uses Mpeg4 ;) But Mpeg4 has alot battles ahead of it and may never get used like it could be because of all the BS thats going on.
