I inadvertently assigned the Ctrl-Alt-E key combination that opens the MIDI editor to something else. But even after unassigning it to what I changed it to, I'm unable to reassign it to the MIDI editor. The actions list shows Ctrl-Alt-E is unassigned ("Shortcut not found") but I can't find "Open items with built-in MIDI editor" or anything like it in the list of assignable commands. I tried importing the Default.ReaperKeyMap, but even there, that combo isn't assigned to anything. So I'm kinda confused as to where this menu command is stored and configured. I'm sure its's obvious... but not to me atm. Any way to get that back? Thanks!

Doh! Nevermind. I found it! It's the "Open items in primary external editor command." I had seen that when I searched for 'editor' and so on, but it didn't seem that an *external* editor was what I wanted. But it was. (I guess it defaults to the internal when no external midi editor is specified.)

The MIDI editor is technically a kind of an external editor, being a plugin and not built into Reaper itself. ;)

So there would be a possibility to code an alternative editor plugin for someone with more brains than me? Or code a seperate list editor and stuff like that? Would someone understanding the sdk available on reaper fm and fitted with coding skills be capable of doing that?

It was just a sudden idea anyway. Seeing how much love Schwa and probably Justin and Christoph as well give to the MIDI editor currently, I think it's ok the way it is and just wait what they're coming up with anyway. I wouldn't want to miss what they've acchieved by now and I have the feeling Reapers MIDI editor will be outstanding with some more time gone by (it already is at some parts). Good to know it is possible at all, the openness to extensions is one of Reapers strength and it's cool that this also includes the MIDI editors.
