start explorer, select Tools - Folder Options, click on the view tab, scroll down and check "use simple file sharing (recommended), then press OK. If that doesn't solve it go to the control panel, select network connections, and run the network setup wizard and make sure you select the correct workground name (normally you do that when you install XP but so far every time I reinstalled I still had to run this wizard, after that an rebooting things worked just fine).

OK, Try any of these two: 1. Enable Guest Account -Goto Controll Panel -Goto User Accounts -Beneath the text saying "or pick an account to change" click on the "Guest" account -Select to trun this account ON 2. Disable Built in Firewall -On desktop rightclick My Network Places and select Properties -In the new window that pops up rightclick on Local Area Connection and select Properties -Goto the advaced tab and disable the INternet Connection Firewall Pretty certain it should work after this.... If it still doesnt' work, try accessing your XP machine from the other machine this way: - Hit start button and select Run - In the command line type this : \\192.168.0.1\sharename IN which "192.168.0.1" should be replaced by the IP-address of your XP machine and "sharename" should be replaced by the name you gave to the shared drive or folder.... Like d for instance. If this works I think probably your machine is indeed on another workgroup name which does not allow you to access it by browsing the network from a machine that carries another workgroup name... Thanks everyone for your help, it was turning the guest account on, that did the trick.
