hey, I'm really a noob and i need some questions answered: 1) Where can i get the LATEST version of the decoder as a directshow filter? And why don't the Xvid coders release their own? 2) What are the binaries i see alll over the place? is it the latest version of the encoder? 3) Are the encoder and decoder upated the same time? or the 0.9.x version that was released recently is only the encoder? 4) What exactly is ffdshow? I heard that it is some kind of a directshow filter that supports both divx and xvid, but i already have DivX, why would i need to use it? and will it overlap on the current filter? thanks :)

Caleb, since this is your first post i won't strike you. Your post is a real insult to everyone on this board who's spending some time answering questions. I'll make a list of the forum rule violations you did: - 1) Read up before asking! There are tons of guides, FAQs and each forum has a dedicated Q&A thread with additional info. - 1a) Use the search function before posting. Chances are your question has already been answered. - 2) Respect the netiquette: Lurk and get to know the forum before you post. - 9) Use a title that describes the content of your post. Don't use all caps or special characters to draw attention. That's quite an impressing list for a single post :) But now to your questions: 1) Every binary has it's own xvid.ax (dsf) decoder. It's usually up to date with the latest changes in decoding routines. 2) At the top of this forum is a section called "FAQ". Read it. I mean it. 3) See question 1. And no, 0.9.0 is just a first release of the stable tree, it's a fullblown encoder/decoder (hence CoDec). 4) There is a thread called "dffshow" (right, misspelled) with over 400 posts in it. You're sure you don't get the info you want there? Else go to and read the link "About". You may want to use it as a replacement for xvid/divx decoders - e.g. the xvid decoder is incapable of decoding the latest xvid bitstreams with all features turned on (i think GMC was the problem). With ffdshow you can properly decode it. And you have huge amount of possibilities for post-processing the images. Regards Koepi

That "was" means: at the time i tested it. There are no changes made in GMC code so it's not yet fixed. Regards Koepi

OK, nevertheles, even without stable_working GMC, XviD's my favourite MPEG4 codec (amazing what it can do at low - real low - bitrate... ). Thnx for all the good work :) Regards NoLogo

Im sorry for not reading the stickies.. i was late to school when i posted it :) Anyways, im not really sure why i should replace the DivX5 decoder that i already have with ffdshow? I checked your site but i found an old and outdated binaries. It seems that you only compile encoders or something, and Nic makes DSF, am i right? If so, why don't you guys label the DSF/encoder with the version number instead of dates. For example, how could i get a DSF that was made from the latest public release (0.9.0)?? How does NIC compile a DSF ? he takes only the decoder part from the source and creates the DSF himself? How come ffdshow supports divx5 decoding? divx5 isn't open source.. and 4 wasn't either as far as i remeber. In the meantime im only interested in DS...
