Tried that version here, still getting crackling with H.264. Nonetheless, I see an opportunity (if it's feasible) for Reaper to work with video out of the box if the codec is an open format. Anybody know the deets on the open formats vs x64?
Don't forget you can convert almost anything to a workable codec with the x86 version of Reaper and the x86 FFMPEG DLL files. Then there's also MPEG Streamclip which works on both OSX and Windows for converting files. Btw, H264 files made of I-Frames only is quite popular in post production circles. And finally, many people transcode the H264 Quicktime files in to something more workable for editing and mixing anyway, just because of seeking speed.
"Workable Codec" being, something that's not workable because it's just sheer nonsense to be working on a DV25 when the filesize is something like 1GB per minute of video. That's just not feasible. Especially when working on multiple projects and receiving multiple H.264's a day. ...I hope that someone looks into the open codecs, if google and youtube are going that way, it seems like a very logical and safe thing to do in Reaper and no doubt the industry will follow whatever the web does.
I've posted this information in forums before, and despite the lack of feedback to check if the same happens in other computers, I've found that video files (I experimented with MOV, FFV1 and HUFFYUV) with audio previously converted to PCM work beautifully in 64bit Reaper, even without audio problems (which always was my biggest problem - there was always the solution of separating the audio from the video).
I tried that once before when I saw your post elsewhere and it didn't work for me. Also I tried a file with no audio and that didn't work. This is really weird though, that people are coming out of the woodwork with duct-taped pseudofixes to try and get video working but there's really no discussion about how to really make it work. We know H.264 is out because of the dll non-development. So what about the open codecs?
Sorry to ask but did you try this with the ffmpeg dlls correctly instaled and not disabled in preferences? If you did then there's must be something on my system that is making this work, I've been working in Reaper for the last couple of months with no problems.

Yes, all installed and enabled. But it sort of doesn't matter because the supported formats are all colossal file size. So...anybody know anything about VP8/Theora? What decoders are involved? Is there 64bitness available already, etc? I know very little about codecs or really anything at all except music. But I loooove for my tools to work. So I'd def love to hear if anyone has any insight to the possibility of this working.
