I just bought a bunch of Verbatim 4x DVD-R media. Problem is that my Toshiba SD-R5002 burner recognises them as CD:s! I previously had the same kind of media except they were 2x and they worked fine. I use Nero 5.5 and tried new Nero 6 just to be sure. I checked the firmware in the drive and toshibas firmware scanning tool says that firmware update is not necessary. I found one reference from google groups, where one guy said that he had the same kind of problem with his NEC drive and DVD+r media AFTER he had installed XP Service Pack 1. Unfortunately there was no solution. So this might be windows related problem. I have windows 2000. So do you have any idea where to go from here. It would be nice to know what part or driver in windows does this recognising of media and how could I update(or downdate) it. -Pete

Welcome to the forums. Isn't Toshiba SD-R5002 a 2x drive? In this case, no wonder the drive wouldn't recognize them. As far as I know, all recordable DVD have pre-recorded information that contains allowed burn speed settings. Nero reads this information and might refuse to burn a 4x DVD-R at 2x speed. You'll have to use different media.

Yes it is 2x drive, but it can't be true that 4x media cannot be burned at 1x or 2x! 4x is just the maximum speed the media is qualified for. At least this is how things work with CD-R:s, you can burn 48x media even in 1x if you wish. -Pete
