MIDI to trigger audio samples?

Is it possible to record my own sound samples and then use a MIDI track to trigger those sounds. If yes, could anyone please give detailed instructions on how to do this?

One way is to load a VST sampler as a plugin on a track, and then trigger that. There are lots of such sample players. ReaSamplomatic comes bundled with reaper.
