This is what I found on the vintage performance site from John Parker about the T5 swap, it's not just a straight on bolt on an Amazon: T9 Transmission Swaps The T5 is too wide to fit in the small transmission tunnels of most pre-1970 Volvos. But since owners of those cars want a true 5 speed too, we had to find a trans that would fit. So we came up with what is know in Ford circles as the "German 5 speed." Besides being the basic transmission in the Ford Sierra in Europe, it was also used in the Mercur, the XR4Ti, and some Mustangs and Thunderbirds on this side of the pond. This trans is currently a favorite transplant into various MG models, and is also a perfect size for the small tunnel Volvos. While not a trans that I would use with a 300 HP turbo motor, it's a vary good candidate for normally aspirated motors with up to 200 HP. For racing applictions there are both close ratio synchro and dog ring versions. Look for further info here and in the price list on this swap. For more information look here:

Ken Glazebrook, an Amazonian but not a club member sent me two articles whose addresses I will list below. One I believe to be the same as the page listed by the last writer, althiugh I haven't openned that one yet and another on doing the swap into a 240 with no tunnel issues. My interior is toally done so any idea of tearing out the tunnel is out of the question. I will, however have a look at the "German" option. Thanks.
