Volume automation - Where exactly does it happen?

I see, when automating Master track volumes (ie: the tracks that have slaves attached), that the actual master fader does not move, thus the master - slave relation is not preserved - not serves its purpose. Ie: If I manually move a master fader, all of its slaves move accordingly. But if I insert a avolume automation to that master track, it would change the output volume but there is no change in the fader position nor its slaves. Am I stuck here or is there something that I am not seeing?

On page 195 and 196 of you'll find the signal flow of Reaper described graphically. Go grab the PDF if you haven't already. There are actually two volume faders. One that you use in the Read/Trim mode, and which is called "Track Volume Fader" in the signal flow diagram, and the fader that appears when you use the Read, Latch, Touch and Write automation modes. It is important to know what these two faders do. Only one of them shows up at a time, depending on the automation mode you're in. The Read/Trim fader is static and cannot be automated, which is why some folks refer to it as a trim pot, like those found in consoles right at the top of a channel strip, except this one sits at the end of the channel strip. The volume automation is recorded and visually played back with the Read, Latch, Touch and Write fader. The signal flow diagram will tell you exactly where it all sits.

Big thanks for this... So... a track volume fader that is in read mode can not be shifted up or down? I tried but could not do it. At least not with the standard modifiers (ctrl, alt, shift), right? In fact, it would be great if the main track fader is the trimmer (like an alternate gain) and the volume envelope track/fader ready to make it move... Am I just dreaming of something not possible?

Apart from the manual, which is always a good place to start, there are plenty of video tutorials around. There are and of course there is the series Kenny Goia produced for .
