I know a long time ago JDOBBS said he was looking into adding pal2ntsc capability to dvdrb utilizing the dgpulldown technique. Has there been any progress on this? Since the video and audio are already demuxed, the process would involve flagging the video and reencoding with a resize to 720x480 and reauthoring with the "new" framerate. Not a small task but doable.

If that's all you had to do... maybe. But to do an entire DVD you also have to do menus, subpictures, IFO files, and lots of other things. I said I'd look into do a movie-only conversion... but that was the extent of it.

Yeah, I was really gung-ho about this feature a couple of years ago. However, in the US, settops that can play PAL have become quite cheap. I got one for about $30 a year or so ago. The problem is that the silly thing is still bound to region 1, so I had to back up my discs and make them region-free; then I could play them (still as PAL, of course). Anyway, you might want to look into a new settop. Kind of silly to buy hardware just to play a few discs, I know. Though when you consider that you can buy one for about the same price as a DVD, it's a little less absurd (or so it seemed to me, anyway).

Too true. And another disadvantage is that I sometimes show snippets of video to my classes, and you know the university has ancient NTSC-only players in the classrooms. So I'd still like to see this feature, but I was just letting you know that there are other, relatively inexpensive work-arounds.
