Zeus, I agree about the amount of compression. Typically it is about 10 - 20%. However, in my situation, the main reason for using stuffit is for compatibility when burning archive CD's on my PC.
quote:
If even only ONE BIT would change when using sit-compression, practically no application compressed with it would work...

Good point. Makes perfect sense really. Most apps available on the net for Mac are compressed using Stuffit. ______ Dannii.

I recall having made the same test as you. No loss of data. However, take note that audio data won't compress in size very much when using Aladdin Dropstuff. If even only ONE BIT would change when using sit-compression, practically no application compressed with it would work... For the real need to compress audio files in size, there exists lossless compressing methods. Z

Ok, so what I need to know, is there any way to compress an entire folder to multiple cd's? For example on a PC, when you zip to disk, it will fill up one and ask for another until done on large archives. Is this possible with stuffit? If so, it would save a bunch of time that would otherwise be spent divying up file to be compressed onto seperate disks! Thanks, NP

There is a Segment command in Stuffit that allows you to set the size of the segments. You can use the pull-down menu in Preferences/Segment/Segment Size to select "CD-ROM (640 MB)" or "Other" to create custom size segments. Segmenting creates files in numerical order, so that when all of the files are moved to a new drive, opening segment 1 will in turn open the other segments. Bruce

Bruce, What version of the Aladdin software do you guys have? I have downloaded the latest updates for Stuffit and Dropstuff and still dont have the segment option. Do you have Stuffit Deluxe? ______ Dannii.

Yes, I have the latest version of Stuffit Deluxe, 6.0.1 for mac, and the full version of Stuffit for Windows as well.(I do everything on a mac, but use that to prepare files in Virtual PC) I should have mentioned that some of these features require the deluxe version. I've had the full version for years, so I don't know exactly what is missing from the free and shareware versions. I'm fairly certain there is a comprehensive list on Aladdin's site, though.
