I came across this plugin which I think would be GREAT for mixing: It's called Wave Rider. It works like an automatic controller to ride volume levels. It would be great to even out any track for a mix without having to ride the faders. It also has a mode where it will pull the faders down to zero if the track level is below a certain volume. That would be great for cleaning up noisy tracks. Problem is it's only RTAS and Mac. Does anyone know if something similar exists that could be used in Reaper? Or, would it be that hard of a plugin to develop for those that know how?

This seems a little different than a compressor. I've watched several pro-mixing videos, and even though they use compression plugins, they still sometimes ride the faders to even out tracks. This automates that. It actually rides the faders much like you would do yourself during a mix.
Interesting. This part caught my attention: "You can use Wave Rider on live inputs as well. Wave Rider can control the faders whether Pro Tools is on playback or stopped. It can be used in various combinations in a broadcast situation." Does this mean it could be used in live recording to catch transients without the use of either compression or a hard limiter? EDIT. Oh, hang on. I just thought a bit more about this. It would lead to sudden changes in overall volume levels ... not nice. OK - scrap that! :)

you can totally do this now with parameter modulation! add a fader plug and modulate the gain... write the automation, then turn off param mdulation and you're good to go... the power of REAPER!!

sometimes you just want to ride the faders to avoid using a compressor altogether. it is another way to approach dynamics..."slap on a plugin" is sometimes not the best answer.

And AGAIN larrygates covers this, and it's ignored! Reminds me of Digg.com This is a GREAT idea for a plugin, and a very quick well thought out idea. The work arounds ARE NOT THE SAME in reaper. Mainly because you don't even need automation or setting up any routing for this RTAS plug to work. You just put it on, input thresholds, and floor levels, then you have Retardedly smooth compression. But not so much PRE-FADER effects inserts. I only know of a 1 DAW that does pre-fader inserts. WHY DOES REAPER NOT DO PRE-FADER INSERTS? I know I can send a track to a comp or whatever, and monitor from the send track, but that's 2 tracks to do 1 thing. Where's the pre-fader button on ALL plugs?
aarg - @larrygates - my suggestion is not a workaround ... it will give you *exactly* the same result. you don't need to write automation to use my scheme, you can just let it ride: automation is just if you want to tweeze the behavior... try it: just put some gain plug (how about Sonalksis freeG?) on a track - go to the envelopes window and click the mod button on the gain parameter - by adjusting the mod window controls you can set up REAPER to compress expand or duck the signal by moving the fader *exactly as wave rider does!!!* bang - you just paid for your REAPER license...
