Anyone know why development has stopped on bbMPEG encoder? It's acknowledged to be a very high quality MPEG-2 encoder, although slow. But with all other encoders being closed source and expensive, I'm curious why bbMPEG seems to get very little attention and no ongoing development. Is it due to pressure from MPEG-LA? Is it perhaps that the bbMPEG algorithm has pretty much reached its limits? Just curious...

Hmmm... perhaps it *does* have to do with MPEG-LA patents? I found the following in the bbMPEG source: /* Copyright (C) 1996, MPEG Software Simulation Group. All Rights Reserved. */ /* * Disclaimer of Warranty [snip] * The MPEG Software Simulation Group does not represent or warrant that the * programs furnished hereunder are free of infringement of any third-party * patents. * * Commercial implementations of MPEG-1 and MPEG-2 video, including shareware, * are subject to royalty fees to patent holders. Many of these patents are * general enough such that they are unavoidable regardless of implementation * design. 'Course, this doesn't say anything about *free* implementations...
