I saw on digidesign's website that they only qualify external FireWire 400 hard drives with the Oxford 911 chipset to run with pro tools. How do i tell if my drive has this chipset? I have the 300GB seagate with push-button backup () - does anyone else have this drive and/or know if it has this chipset? Is the chipset really necessary, or am i ok running my seagate? I don't think i have experienced any errors in 7.1.1cs1 pertaining to the hard drive, but i have recently had trouble bouncing tracks. The bounces occasionally end up rife with pops and clicks that are annoyingly audible for the length of the song. Could this be related?

Modern drives are a pretty sure to have the 911chipset for firewire. Did you check your System profile info for the disk? (About this Mac-More Info-Firewire). FW 800 drives have 912chipsets and work great if you have that option. USB does not work real well even USB2. Pops and clicks are a indicator of digital timing issues. Are you converting to 44.1 and dithering your mixdowns? P.S. L-Dogg are you using the firewire connection? MR

L-Dogg did you reformat for the Mac? Most of drives come PC formated, they are readable (except NTFS formated) but PT will see them as a Transfer drive only not a Record or Playback drive

I think you will find that the chipset issue is to do with the external case. Converting from firewire to IDE. not to do with specific drives. for instance...... check out the Apple ICE CUBE case, check the specs and it will inform you that it has Oxford 911 chipset, but there is no drive in the case........hhmmmmmmm.
