Norton Utilities. And get the latest bootable version on CD. None of this download the update.... Norton AV is invaluable to me also. As MBDF/ab virus is circulating and recirculating around these parts. As well as infecting at least one 'shockwave' server here in the US of A. I leave it set to autoprotect (universal safe zone)

I guess Norton Utilities' Speed Disk must have really improved since I stopped using it in favor of DiskExpress Pro. Back then it couldn't defrag the startup disk or defrag in the background while you did other tasks, and you couldn't set scheduled middle-o-the-night automatic defrags and have it shut down the computer when finished. And it never ever cared which files you might want to stack at the fastest outer part of the disk, of which DEP gives you numerous options. If Norton could do this I'd have to think about buying it just for the other utilities it does, but it's my understanding that DiskExpress Pro is the only one that can. And is it Norton Utilities or Norton Antivirus that protects you from that MDBF/ab...or have they bundled them both into one $250 product by now? The propellerheads at must be quivering in their Birkenstocks.

Ditto on the Alsoft. Disk Warrior is an essential tool to have around for emergencies, and the CD version comes with a great defragger. It's also only like $69 too. Cheap insurance.

The safest way to defragment a drive is to copy it's contents to another volume/drive, delete the originals and copy it back. The process of copying all the data will defragment it. Before you copy everything back to the original drive, you should initialize it with the ATTO drive utility, while your there. It only takes a few seconds. I little pro-active maintenance.
