Do you have a budget in mind? Do you have a good room that sounds good? What kind of mic pre's? Let me know the above and I'll give you some pointers. -Tom
Kick: AKG D12/D112 Snare: SM57 Toms: Sennheiser MD421/MD441 Overheads: AKG C451 or Neumann KM184 or AKG C414. Something like that will make it sound nice
--------------------- I like girls with a couple stab wounds, bullet holes, been knocked up a few times. I like girls who'll be able to drive me and look over and be like 'you know my driver's license is suspended.' I like girls who you know have bad credit when they're 2
Also remember to get the drums to sound as good as possible before you mic them. Tuning and getting the right heads are extremely important to get the best sound.

personally I hate the sound of d112's, If you got the loot here's my favorite drum setup. RE20=Kick MD421's= Toms SM57=Snare top B.L.U.E Dragonfly=Snare bottom Royer R121's=Overhaeds Of course you also need some good pre's too though I've used this setup at school using mackie pre's from there 32 track 8 bus board, then also done this setup at my house using a UA 2108, and m610, these amps color and are choice for drum recording, but the difference obviously was night and day expecailly with the dynamic mics.
I second Vaphoron, if your drums aren't tuned right or the haeds are dead or if the drums just don't sound good you will never get a good drum sound period.
I second the tuning comment. If I had a dime for everytime I've heard someone say, "No matter what mic I use it sounds like PbbbTTTT!" Then I listen and say, "That's because the DRUM sounds like PbbbTTTT!" I could upgrade to HD3. Anyway, mic choice is something that is different for each situation and project. The best thing to do is go to a studio that has a large collection. However, if you are trying to assemble a collection and want to know some good starting point mics, here's some that come to mind right now: Kick: AKG D112, Sure SM57, E/V RE20 Snare: Sure SM57 or BETA58, Neumann KM184 Toms: E/V ND308 or ND408, Sure SM57 or SM58, Those funky looking Sennhisers who's name I can't remember right now. O/H: AKG 414, Sennheiser MKH-50, Neumann KM184
