Ok, first off what exactly is the Sun computer? It has the sun logo on it. Running linux? why? what makes it branded with the sun logo? runs amd64? or something outta this world? Next, these machines run linux. They're in my university cos i have to use this program for our class that only works well in linux (the irony is overbearing). I can't find a decent internet audio thingy for linux. since its in our university, we don't have the latest flash, so nothing that's online will work. meaning no pandora, last.fm, live365, NOTHING. I'm looking for internet radio links, and a software that plays them. last time i tried the music player software in linux, it didn't work. and why do university courses force us linux? i mean, we could use XP but we'll have to go thru Putty or some sort. Thinking about it, i wish Microsoft was more of a monopoly than it is now. it's a good thing i think.

Music on a Sun??? Well I guess you could hook up a bunch of plows behind a B-52 to plow a field, but it wouldn't be my first choice of a tool.... ;-)

Solaris IS capable of near-real-time or even real-time response, but most Sun systems aren't running workloads that make use of the capability. Oh, except for the ones running laboratory data collection... ;) OpenSolaris would be a real contender if it had more hardware support, but I don't think you'll be seeing too many RME drivers for it. Sad. Sun makes some REALLY well-built hardware, and their SPARC architecture is still going strong. I did some work for a company that specialized in gathering old decommissioned hardware, refurbing it, and selling it. One of their best techs told me that of all the machines that he tore down and rebuilt (including AS/400s and IBM mainframe gear), the Sun equipment was the best built and (important from his standpoint) was less likely to slice up your hands when you were working inside it...EVERY metal edge was rounded off. Small things, but indicative of a different manufacturing ethic. *gets down off of his Sun soapbox...* Scott
